Northumberland is known for its beautiful sweeping countryside and rolling hills. It’s the perfect destination to visit in the UK this summer. Apart from the stunning landscape Northumberland offers a whole host of activities, perfect for a relaxing break and to get away from it all.
Of course, there are many things I could write about country life but with Air BnB, it’s easy to book a cosy getaway and experience it for yourself. Stay in a little cottage, tucked into a hill, and enjoy a roaring fire at night.
By day, take out the car, enjoy the Roman roads, and adorable wildlife and go hunting for the best food. Here are my five top restaurants Northumberland has to offer. There’s something for everyone on this list, but mainly a gorgeous selection of food.

Hjem in Hexham
This beautifully British restaurant in Hexham packs a Scandinavian twist. Although it looks traditional from the outside, inside the Hadrian Hotel you’ll find the little sophisticated fine dining restaurant, Hjem.
Vibrant and fresh, like the decor, the food is modern, elegant and utterly delicious.
You’ll find Hjem at the back of Hadrian’s hotel bar, it’s a micro-restaurant with a Michelin star. A hidden little gem that’s perfect for special occasions, romantic evenings and cosy nights out.
Of course, Hjem is Geordie slang for ‘home’, but it also means the same in Scandinavian. If you’re looking for friendly service with a smile, you are going to love this place.

Try the tasting menu for £120pp consisting of 15-18 dishes in various sizes, to get the full experience. This is one of those places that you can visit again and again.
Their food is exciting, with non-stop glowing reviews. A rare treat that anyone can enjoy with vegan-friendly options. (Just make sure you book any dietary requirements in advance).
The Red Kite, Winlaton Mill

Located on Spa Well Road, The Red Kite at Winlaton Mill, is a traditional British Pub that serves up home-cooked comfort food that’s affordable. Located only a stone’s throw away from Derwent Walk, it’s the perfect place to stop off after a long walk in the countryside.
Comfort food that’s served in a stunning location, you are sure to love The Red Kite, of course, is named after the bird that frequents the area.
From Sunday lunches to fish and chips, this place is a crowd-pleaser. Their vegetarian options are mouth-watering too.

Also located in Hexham, if you’re looking for a slice of the finest locally sourced ingredients that Northumberland has to offer, this is your place. With seasonal menus, this place even has its own kitchen garden, so you can rest assured that the food is organic and pesticide-free.
Try their afternoon tea for something special, or a tasting board to sample local tasting meats and cheese. Book this place for a large event and with British food, that has a modern twist, the decor is sure to impress and match that theme.
Book terrace dining for sweeping views of the countryside and alfresco dining.

Rumba Casa Latina

If you’re looking for something with city vibes, this Peruvian/ Latin inspired restaurant will not disappoint. Located in Newcastle city centre, this restaurant offers a selection of authentic central and south American dishes. They also have an awesome selection of wines to try.
Fun, exciting and the perfect place to enjoy with friends, this small restaurant is cosy and fun. Also, their cocktails are pretty amazing. Why not enjoy a night out in Newcastle after and see how much fun this city really is.
The French Quarter

Elegant French dining without the fuss, this restaurant is located in Newcastle City Centre and it comprises stunning French food, except you don’t have to talk French here.
If you like fine wines and dining like a Michelin star- but without the price tag I can’t recommend this place enough. If you like meat their boards, with authentic bread to match.

A cool vibes and friendly service, this place is well worth a visit.

Soph.
